"We still see many of the other parents who were part of [our Early Intervention program]. As a result we find and lend support to these parents still struggling with the everyday needs of an exceptional child."

Nova Scotia credit unions make single largest corporate financial contribution to Early Intervention Association

HALIFAX - February 27, 2008 - The Nova Scotia Credit Unions Charitable Foundation is pleased to announce their multi-year funding commitment to The Early Intervention Association of Nova Scotia (EINS). Early Intervention programs provide assistance and support to families who have an infant or young child with developmental challenges.

Brenda Putnam, Chair of EINS says, "Early Intervention currently serves 661 families with another 175 families on a waiting list. For children with developmental challenges, early diagnosis, consultation and support are proven to improve their chances for success. We are so pleased to have the support of credit unions in Nova Scotia – their funding will allow Early Intervention programs to enhance and expand services to the families of Nova Scotia."

The funding provided by the Charitable Foundation will assist with program delivery in the 18 Early Intervention programs across the province. The programs offered in each community provide the core services outlined by the Department of Community Services. The core services for Early Intervention are home visits, family support, developing and implementing individual family services plan and transition planning. Other services based on the resources and needs of the community such as sibling groups, and playgroups are also offered.

Jim Johnson, Chair of the Nova Scotia Credit Unions Charitable Foundation says, "When EINS presented their needs to us earlier this year, our decision to provide support was easy. If you’ve been blessed with healthy children, free of developmental challenges, it can be difficult to understand what it would be like; but for the parents we heard from, who are dealing with the health and developmental challenges of a child every day, often while working and raising other kids, it became clear how much Early Intervention programs are needed."

The Nova Scotia Credit Unions Charitable Foundation works to enhance and enrich the lives of Nova Scotians by supporting community programs and projects in health care, education, the environment and the Arts. Since 2000, the Foundation has invested $320,000 in our community; almost $79,000 last year alone.
