Who is an Early Interventionist?

An Early Interventionist is a professional trained to work with young children with special needs in partnership with their families and a variety of community-based professionals. Under this partnership, an Early Interventionist prepares a developmental profile and helps to design and implement a program to address the child’s developmental needs and the family’s priorities.

  1. An understanding of Family Centred Care, the essential role of the family in service delivery partnerships and family systems theory.
  2. An understanding of typical and atypical infant and early childhood development and the development of individualized program plans.
  3. An understanding of available community supports and resources and how to support families in maximizing their informal and formal support systems.
